Long long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang (cowherd), who met a fairy from heaven, Zhi Nu (weaver maiden). They fell in love with each other and Zhi Nu secretly came down to the Earth and married Niu Lang. The Niu Lang farmed out in the fields while the Zhi Nu wove at home. They loved each other very much and gave birth to a boy and a girl, living a happy life together. The Zhi Nu also brought the silkworm from heaven to the people on the Earth and taught them how to raise the silkworm and weave its smooth and beautiful silk. However, such good times didn't last forever. The God of Heaven soon discovered their relationship and ordered the Queen Mother to bring the Zhi Nu back. The couple was then separated.
With no way to get to heaven, Niu Lang felt frustrated. Then, the old cattle he had raised told him that after it died, Niu Lang could make a pair of shoes with its skin. Once Niu Lang put on the shoes, he would be able to fly to heaven. Niu Lang did as the celestial cattle told him and flew to heaven with his son and daughter. Upon seeing Zhi Nu, he mounted the clouds and rode the mist, racing to Zhi Nu. As he approached, the Queen Mother waved her gold hairpin and a river with rolling waves appeared. Niu Lang and Zhi Nu were then separated on the banks of the river, where they wept bitterly. Finally, the depth of their love moved the magpies. So many magpies flew to help them. They built a "magpie bridge" so that Niu Lang and Zhi Nu could walk over them to meet each other. The Queen Mother could do nothing to stop them, so she allowed them to meet each other on the bridge on every 7th day of every 7th lunar month. This is the origin of the Double Seventh Festival.
Chinese Valentine's Day falls on the seventh day of July in Chinese lunar calendar. It is supposed to be a celebration of love and romance, but what if love faces disapproval?
