Answer to the Chinese Test

How to Say “Daydreaming” in Chinese?

The correct answer for this quiz is C.

Lǐ Méi: Wà, Luóbótè Pàdīngsēn hǎo shuài a! Wǒ yào jià gěi tā.
   李  梅:哇, 罗伯特. 帕丁森        好  帅   啊!我  要  嫁  给 他。

Li Mei: Wow, Robert Pattinson is so handsome! I want to marry him.

Wáng Lì: Nǐ yòu zài zuò báirìmèng le.
   王  力:你 又   在  做    白日梦   了。

Wang Li: You are daydreaming again.

Analysis:

In the dialogue, Li Mei shows her love for Robert Pattinson, a very handsome actor. Her friend, Wang Li, thinks that it’s impossible for her to marry the famous star, so he responds with “你又在做白日梦了。(Nǐ yòu zài zuò báirìmèng le.) You are daydreaming again.”

“白日梦 (Báirìmèng) Daydreaming” literally means dreaming during the day, but it is more frequently used to indicate impractical thoughts or fantasies. When someone thinks about something impossible or impractical, we can say that he or she “在做白日梦。( zài zuò báirìmèng.) is daydreaming.”

Example:

Tā xiǎng yí yè chéng míng, nà gēn běn jiù shì zài zuò báirìmèng.
他    想  一 夜    成      名,那  根   本   就 是  在  做    白日梦。

Thinking about shooting to fame overnight, he is absolutely daydreaming.
