Yao Ming, one of the legends of Chinese basketball, is the pride of the nation, known and loved by all Chinese people. Yao Ming has celebrity status in China that is shared by few. Before Yao's recent retirement, he played basketball in the NBA for the Houston Rockets and was one of the best at his position. After suffering a series of career a ltering injuries, in July of 2011 Yao Ming decided to retire and to pursue other ventures. When Yao Ming made a statement announcing his retirement, he said:

Wŏ háiyào gănxiè shēnghuó, wúlùn wŏ suŏ rè'ài de lánqiú háishì biéde dōngxi, dōushì
 我   还要    感谢        生活，   无论  我   所  热爱 的  篮球    还是    别的    东西， 都是
shēnghuó de yí bùfen.

 生活      的 一 部分。     
I'm also thankful for life. Not just my life's passion, basketball, but also other things--everything is a part of life.
